Here, kitty. . .

High: 35 °F
Low: 16 °F
Conditions: Increasing clouds, with a chance of snow after midnight.

Friends, we don't want to alarm you, but we have an honest-to-goodness infestation on our hands. You may remember our post from a few weeks ago, when we thought we had spotted bobcat tracks in our back yard. And some of our readers might even remember our adventure last spring, when we were tracked by what appeared to be a lynx.

Both of these events were exciting enough, but check out this photo just sent to us by our friend Brent:

That's right: four lynx--hanging out right here in Maine! Not only that, but they're almost the size of huskies! Be careful canines--these wild kitties look they have a few scores to settle (Miss Khyra, we're just sayin'. . . )

When we first saw the title of your post, we were thinking of kitties that were of the domestic kind! Boy oh boy, these kitties are WAY BIG!

PS. Mum almost fell off the chair laughing when she read your "Serious" comment!

'They' say there are none of these on the Olympic Peninsula, however, we have one at least! We have seen him and he is as big as me!!!! Oy. Be very careful, Ari, and DO NOT leave any Peanuts laying around to attract them!

Whoooo! They are beautiful though, aren't they? And they look very healthy! Be careful where you be walking!

Stella

Wow, what an amazing photo. Obviously I've never seen a wild lynx, I've never even seen a bobcat in the wild. I'd drool if I saw something like this and they don't seem too worried about the photographer.

Any theories as to why there are so many lynx out & about? I always thought they were solitary & secretive. Is there some sort of food shortage pushing them to behave more gregariously? (Or is that a mother with nearly-grown kittens?)

WOWZERS! It's like the coyotes here - they're gorgeous, but dangerous! Be safe!

Go the kitties! But they are very big kitties so be sure to keep Leila Tov and Mouse away from them.

Wow! How far from your place were these 4 photographed? I am envious, but would be totally freaking out if they were near my backyard! Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous.

The photo wasn't taken this winter. It was sent to me for Maine Nature News last winter with a story I couldn't confirm. The larger lynx is collared, the three smaller are her offspring. The offspring will be two year olds this spring. Lynx weigh between 20-30 pounds. I wish I could remember more of the story as it came to me. Some of it wasn't accurate but the rest was interesting.

You are so right! I bet those kitties are on their way to Pennsylvania to get Khyra. She talks a big talk about cats!

When I lived in Presque Isle there were always rumors of these creatures being around. Glad to see someone finally got proof!

Kate,

You are one lucky gal to have seen those wonderful animals. Great picture, too.
