Lobster Plates

High: 61° F
Low: 43° F
Conditions: Mostly cloudy with a chance of showers

Our ancient Honda has served us admirably over the last ten years, but we decided it was time for a change. The new caninaturalist-mobile? A very adorable Mini Cooper, complete with checker-board roof:

As you can imagine, Ari looks great in it (though she doesn't like that she can't get traction on the leather seats).
.
When it came time for us to register the car, we knew right away what kind of license plate we wanted:

The lobster is one of those iconic emblems of Maine. It's also one of the nation's biggest success stories when it comes to sustainable fisheries.
.
Lobster is a highly affordable $3.85 a pound right now, so we recently celebrated with a feast. We believe in free-range meat here at the house, so once the lobsters came home, we let them wander around until it was time for their, er, passing.
.
Ari and Mouse were both really interested in these new arrivals:

But the caninaturalist soon decided that they looked like more trouble than they were worth. She opted for kibble, but Mouse persevered.

And then really, really persevered:

By the time the water was boiling, I think these poor creatures were frankly relieved: after all, it's probably better to be boiled than it is gnawed to death.

Ari wasn't much more interested in whole boiled lobster than she was whole live lobster. But once they were shelled and chopped, she changed her tune:

As for us? We opted for lobster and truffle risotto: almost as much fun as the new car!

Oy. Those things have pinchers! I guess the rubber band is there to keep them out of the Peanuts? That's a good idea. I think I'll get one for Ella's mouth. By the way - nice wheels! I think a black and white goat would look really nice in there. The goatmother wants the recipe. :)

Oh, and that's a cute car. Not much bigger than The Mom's Big Red, my Huskymobile.

Love the car!

My husband once brought home some lobsters as a perk from work. The kids were small and my girl kept calling it crab chicken. We call it crab chicken to this day.

Wow! That looks so delicious. Interesting to have a dinner that first serves as a cat toy, LOL.

Your new car looks like it will be very fun.

I've never eaten lobster, but I'm sure if you like it, I would too.

I know that you are capable of many things, but I was not aware that torturing lobsters was one of them! Having cats gnaw on your eye stalks does not seem like any fun.

On the other hand, it does mitigate the damages somewhat by being thoughtful enough to provide the local squirrel population with a checker board to while away those cold lonely winter eves upon (and yes, I suppose they will supply their own checkers, particularly since we already know about the abundance of acorns thereabouts).

What a great little car. Uh, how does Ari fit in it? I think it looks like just the right size for me!
Uh, and are you eating my friends, the lobsters? Ok, well, maybe I would have joined Mouse in snoopervising them, but still I bet they were probably my friends.

What an excellent way to celebrate the new car! I love it, although I can emphatise with Ari about the leather seats. Lobsters...drool...drool...

Whee! Styling new wheels! Super groovy! If I see you tootling on the Maine roads I'll wave.

PS. Good idea on the lobster, I think it time to get me some. If you ever want to read a hilarious story about cooking lobster, check this out:

The new lobster plate is a lot nicer than the old one. I do the same thing with my lobsters when I get them, put them on the floor to freak out the cats.

The new car looks like a fine ride. :) And, fabulous choice of the license plate. My human has the lobster one too.

I haven't had lobster in a while. My human had it this summer but I didn't get any (well truth be told I wasn't in the same town as her when she had it).

Everything looks YUMMY!
