This week for our State Park Sabbatical we traveled north to Moosehead Lake. There, Mt. Kineo rises out of the depths of Maine’s largest body of water. The subject of legend, Kineo was long-believed to be the overturned dog bowl of a native god’s canine companion. With its steep sides and flat top, we have no problem believing that Kineo, turned rightside up, could hold even a caninaturalist's supply of kibble. And while we didn’t find any dog food to speak of on this trip, we did find plenty of other things worth anyone’s consideration.High: 59°F

The cliffs of Kineo. At the turn of the 20th century, Mt. Kineo was the site of one of the most opulent resorts in the world. A Russian princess, who spent her summers there, jumped to her death off of these cliffs after receiving word that her fiance had called off their wedding.

Isn't Kineo (& Moosehead) amazing? I love it up there. Did you see the Kate? Years ago, I ran the museum, and cruised regularly up and down the lake aboard her. Greenville has changed a lot since then. I still rue the loss of the Boom Chain Restaurant and the world's best doughnuts. Thanks for the trip back in time!
ps is that story about the Russian princess true? I never could tell if it was just another of the many tall tales from the area.
I wonder if the view from the top will be the same once Plum Creek is finished with their developement?

Such extreme beauty where you live! I am totaly envious! And I see you saw some of my fellow mooses! As a mini moose, as mom calls me, it's nice to see some in pics! Looks like Ari had quite the exhausting day!

Moosehead Lake was my Grandfather's favorite place on earth and he died on its waters many years ago. He and my nana would go there every summer and spend 6 weeks there. He was a fine fisherman and he had a boat. He was boating on the lake when he had a heart attack. I was an adolescent when he died but I always remember that he died in the place he loved best on earth. For some reason that is a consolation. I have only been there once to the south end of the lake at Wilson Pond. I still have a piece of driftwood collected from the shores from that one visit. You can see it propped against the wall in my backyard photos sometimes. It is my connection to my grandfather and Moosehead. I love the story and photos in this post. My Nana loved Mt. Kineo. You have reminded me of all of this. Thank you.

It is beautiful at the season of autumn, and coloring is rich.
And, nature always changes.
The acorn is few of this year in Japan.
Therefore, the thing eats for the acorn to change goes out to the town by the bear
and the deer, and is dangerous in the search.
It is necessary to value nature. ：）

Great post. My Dad and Step-Mom live in Lily Bay which is just above Greenville. We have been traveling up there for over 20 years although we have never climbed Mt Kineo but we have been by it on snowmobile.
